HTC DIAMOND 2 and HTC DIAMOND – Should you upgrade from HTC DIAMOND to HTC DIAMOND 2? – Is it worth it?

HTC released the successor to the HTC DIAMOND sometime back, the HTC DIAMOND 2. HTC described it as more stylish, more sophisticated and promised better battery life on Diamond-2. So, is the Diamond-2 able to deliver whatever it promised? Read on to find out!

1. Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade:

At the launch of HTC DIAMOND 2, HTC made it clear that it would be offering FREE Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade. True, you can grab one from XDA-********** but that won’t be backed by official support. Also, not everyone has the guts to perform stuff (say Hard SPL).

2. Straight plain back:

Although the prism-style back of the original HTC DIAMOND received great reception in the Asian markets, it was not much liked in the EU and US. That is the reason, Sprint came with a different and customized version of the HTC DIAMOND

3. Metal Looks

The body of the Diamond 2 is, although made of plastic, but it feels like metal. Diamond-1 has plastic looks

4. TouchFlo 3D is deeper, much deeper

HTC is trying their best to keep the normal user away from the not-so-finger-friendly interface of the Windows Mobile. The newer version of TouchFlo 3D is much deeper than the TouchFlo used in the original Touch Diamond.

5. More RAM

In Touch Diamond, the max RAM that you got to run your apps was usually around 40-55MB depending from the provider your are buying it from. In Touch Diamond 2, the RAM has been increased to 256MB from 192MB of Diamond-1. Thus, you get 90MB+ RAM free after a fresh soft-reset. Remember, more free RAM = more space for apps to run and less sluggish device

6. Bigger display, Higher number of Pixels

The Diamond-1 had an 2.8-inch display and carried VGA resolution (640×480). The Diamond-2 goes one step further with its 3.2-inch WVGA (800×480) display. This means you can see more data at a glance. The difference is incredible and noticeable much more in an application like Opera Mobile which makes effective use of vertical pixels.

7. Smaller, yet better buttons than the Diamond-1

Yes, that is true. The buttons of the Diamond-1 do not give a lot of tactile feedback.  On the other hand, the buttons in case of Diamond-2 are not overlapping each other as in the case of Diamond-1. Buttons feels great too.

However, HTC DIAMOND 2 is not a complete machine too. It lacks 3.5mm headphone jack which even the chepo phones posses these days

It is thicker than the HTC DIAMOND: The original HTC  DIAMOND was all about style and being thin. The Diamond 2, although has better battery life than the Diamond, but in order to accommodate the bigger battery, it is thicker than the DIAMOND

Non-magnetic stylus

The stylus in the original Diamond was magnetic, but the one in the Diamond 2 is not. It is not a ‘con’ but still we cannot make out why HTC removed the magnet from the stylus

Missing D-Pad

As I’m a Diamond-1 owner, I love using D-Pad to navigate through the lists (eg: list of my contacts) especially when I’m walking on the road. I just find using my D-Pad more comfortable than swiping up and down on the screen to move to the next screen of contacts. May be I’m spoiled by D-Pad after being a Windows Mobile user from the past 8 years, but that’s me. It is surely going to take some time to get myself fully accustomed to Diamond-2.

Final Verdict: SHOULD YOU GET ONE?

Absolutely Yes! The screen is gorgeous to look at and is very sensitive. It is bigger than the original Touch Diamond but still smaller than the iPod Touch which means that it is still very compact and more pocketable than the iPhone. Thanks to the newer Touch Flo 3D, even novice users should not face any problems in using the basic functions of the device. We recommend it
