Seeing the Apple facing the users practice jailbreaking for greater freedom, Microsoft realized they are soon going to be in Apple’s shoes with somewhat ‘restricted’ Windows Phone 7. Microsoft also gives a warning to the users to do the ‘jailbreak’ at their own risk. Have a look at their statement: “We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently [...]

ChevronWP7 opened a new door for Windows Phone 7 users to jailbreak and use it without any approval from Microsoft. But soon the Microsoft team intervened to stop what Apple is facing even now. Chevron WP7 team has pulled out ‘temporarily’ and issued a statement: “To pursue these goals with Microsoft’s support, Brandon Watson has agreed to engage in futher discussions with us about officially facilitating homebrew development on WP7. It is an interesting fact that if you enable “developer mode” on a Windows Phone 7 device, you can sideload apps. Enabling developer mode also allows you to install unapproved apps on your device.

The geniuses are trying their hands on jailbreaking the Windows Phone 7 devices and they are quite successful. The success achieved till now by developer Chris Walshie is grand- a step to provide root access to the Windows Phone 7 file system. Next on the line is, well, same as what you expect from iPhone jailbreaking. New applications and more ‘unofficial’ freedom can be expected if the jailbreak becomes a reality.
