UK Windows Phone fans who weren’t sufficiently inspired by the 3.7-inch display on the Nokia Lumia 800 to make a purchase can now get their grubby mits on a pristine 4.3-inch-toting Lumia 900, with Phones4u offering the black or white version, replete with Windows Phone Tango functionality. The Nokia Lumia 900 will be offered through O2, Vodafone or Orange on a variety of tariffs, or SIM-free for £36 (about $53), which is a wee bit steep compared to the HTC One X and Galaxy S3, premium devices which will only set consmers back an extra $7-8 per month. The Lumia 900 offers a vibrant 4.3-inch Clearblack AMOLED panel with 800 x 480 pixels, jogging along smoothly on a 1.4GHz single-core CPU backed by 512MB RAM. The 8MP camera out back is one of the best in its class, and everything is contained in a tough polycarbonate shell. The version of the Nokia Lumia 900 on sale in the UK offers HSPA+ connectivity, delivering speeds of 5MB/s+. You can read a full review of the Lumia 900 here.

LG E740 Fantasy may never be launched because the company has decided not to produce any more windows based phones. In early 2012 LG decided to focus on Android projects as a result of which development of windows based E740 was stopped. In a way it is a wise decision to cancel the launch of this phone as it seems to be an ordinary window based model and frankly speaking, even if it was launched it would not have been successful because Nokia Lumia 610 is simply far more superior than LG E740 in all aspects. The features of LG E740 are nothing great. It has a 4” TFT LCD display, the CPU is 1 GHz Scorpion. It has 8GB storage out of which 5.6GB is available. Its memory is of 512MB out of which 356 MB is available. It has a 1.3MP camera in the front and 5MP camera with no flash at the back. It also has NFC and Compass. The phone is mainly made out of plastic and thus the look and feel is not at all impressive but then we also need to consider the fact that this is just a prototype and not the final version that was to be released. The phone is quite light in weight. It is not at all stylish in fact it looks quite unexciting. An advanced version of this phone was shown on the Telus branding and that looked amazing and technically advanced. The hardware buttons of the phone are quite annoying; the phone looks similar to the sprint version. It looks as if LG has intentionally incorporated these buttons. The screen is very dull as compared to Nokia ClearBlack. The only unique characteristic of this phone is NFC or near-field communication hardware. This is a great addition but it is not known whether this is LG design or a feature provided by Microsoft. All that we know is NFC is the strongest feature of this phone. The LG E740 Windows phone has OS build 8107 which is Windows Phone Mango CR1, this version had received NFC API but this support was not provided to Mango Proper build 7740. With the help of NFC it becomes easy to share data with other NFC enabled devices. All you need to do is keep the phone next to another NFC enabled device. NFC operations are very advanced and are likely to overtake Bluetooth operations in future. Nokia Lumia 610NFC device has become very popular, LG too has been working on the similar technology for quite some time now. LG was the first company that worked on the Windows OS to produce some cool apps such as ScanSearch and voice to text app. Inspite of having a 1GHz CPU, the Windows phone OS seems to be a bit slothful in LG E740 but this may also be because the version that is being analyzed is not the final product. LG E740 has a rear camera of 5 MP. The camera settings provides some amazing features such as intelligent shot, inbuilt Panorama shot, etc. It also provides the option for Color effects and White balance. The camera version is good, it does not have a flash but still it deserves appreciation. The front facing camera is nothing great. Actually it is not fair to judge a prototype that is still under development and even LG should not talk about what this phone could have been. However LG has never disappointed its customers as all its products have been one the best in the industry. But most of the features that this unfinished phone has to present are mediocre. Since phones like Nokia Lumia 610 have been launched in the market and are very superior in quality, LG E740 would not have excited customers even if it was quoted at a low price.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Microsoft and Nokia may have placed a bid for Canada’s Research In Motion RIM, makers of the firesale Blackberry PlayBook and recently rocked by weak earnings figures for Q4 2011. RIM is apparently seeking financial support, and rumours suggest Microsoft might insist on RIM ditching its Blackberry OS, instead supporting another operating system, possibly Windows Phone or even, if the company continues to turn out its rather excellent tablets, Windows 8. The same source says that Microsoft has also stipulated it would require thats its Direct Exchange server would take the place of all the Blackberry Enterprise Server. The move would be especially beneficial to Microsoft in gaining hardware foothold as it seeks to broaden the adoption of the blossoming Windows Phone ecosystem.

Microsoft is ratcheting up the development process for the Windows Phone platform, announcing a partnership with Nokia and Aalto University in Finland with joint funding of $28 million. The app development program is nicknamed ‘AppCampus’ and will speed up the development of apps for Windows Phone, Symbian, and Series 40 devices. The program should mean more WP apps and better quality too, thanks to training in best practises and comprehensive support, not to mention funding, offered by the project. Participants in the scheme will be given business coaching to help them make their ideas more commercially viable. Hopefully the new versatility will see apps for the WP7 platform evloped at resolutions above 800 x 480 pixels.

The Windows Phone marketplace continues to expand – it recently passed the 70,000 app mark, with 300 new apps being launched every day. Microsoft’s CEO for Greater China, Simon Leung, revealed that the company plans to launch a total of 63 markets, which will please the 100,000 Windows Phone developers currently registered with Microsoft. In a move to further encourage developers to write for the platform, Microsoft has cut the certification process to just three days. The widespread success of the Nokia Lumia 800 around the globe and the rush of manufactureres now embracing the Windows Phone ecosystem should ensure even faster growth in the Windows Phone Marketplace in time for the launch of Window Phone 8, codenamed Apollo, at the end of the year.

The developers Amused Sloth have released a follow-up to Chickens Can Dream, Chickens Can’t Fly, bringing a great mix of humor and nice graphics, and the sharp responsiveness of the controls means Chickens Can’t Fly should be a hit on the Windows Phone platform. The developers have provided more than 50 levels set across five themed laboratories – there’s a Hatchery world, a Butchery world, Cemetary and Military laboratories, and a Physics lab for users to battle through. Gameplay features numerous obstacles and ppower-ups as well as power-downs. Players can earn XBox Live Achievements and strut their way up the XBox Live leaderboards. There’s even a Global Weekly Challenge where users can aim for the top on the global leaderboard. A multiplayer hub is also included. In the Butchery set of levels, for example, players avoid the butcher and cleavers, whilst bossting their energy by munching stray sausages. In cemetary levels witches and zombies chase your character, and Hypno Chicken will put you in a trance to make you easy meat for the nasties. The Physics levels are a maze of lethal electrical machinery and wiring, and throughout your chicken will respond to tilting your Windows Phone handset. Especially good is the way the higher levels don’t become virtually impossible, and the game also incorporates a pretty full suite of Mango functionality – a double-sided live tile, instant resume, free ringtones. A free trial is available but the full app costs $2.99.

Such as Microsoft’s weather app, which has been rebuilt from the ground up, with new features, to comply with Tango’s specifications. HTC launched China’s first Windows Phone smartphone this week – the HTC Triumph (a re-branded version of the HTC Titan) which is shipping with Tango as standard – and Nokia will release WP7 handsets in the People’s Republic before the end of the month.

A survey of more than 2000 developers in January by IDC and Appcelerator suggests virtually unchanged levels of interest amongst developers in the Windows Phone ecosystem at 37%. RIM has fallen further from 20% to 16%. Despite the success of the flagship WP7 handset, the Lumia 800, developers are still not rushing to embrace Microsoft’s mobile OS. However the survey was conducted only a few days after the launch of Nokia Lumia 800, before anyone knew whether it would be popular, so the next set of figures will be more telling, and should reflect confidence amongst developers that consumers are liking Microsoft platform. Interest in developing for Android devices also fell, possibly a consequence of the fragmentation of the platform across multiple devices and versions of the OS. iOS maintained its high level of popularity amongst developers following the improved hardware and record sales of the iPhone 4S in the quarter.

The hardcore coders at XDA have not got their mits on the Windows Phone Tango ROM, and are poring over the grisly details. There seem to be a whole bunch of improvements, including app-switching via the Back button even for 256MB RAM handsets. Where Mango handsets had to be content with the five previously-used apps stored in memory for snappy recall, Tango now caches a full 8 apps for happy and snappy multi-tasking. Microsoft has managed to make memory use more efficient, with the OS using just 122MB of RAM space compared to 153MB currently used by most WP7 Mango devices. Looks like the Windows Phone environment is coming along nicely, and optimizations like these make the budget-end WP7 smartphones that much more fun to use.
