Motorola: No Windows Phone 7

18 February, 2011 Posted by As News (0) Comment

Christy Wyatt MotorolaIt is quite heartbreaking news Motorola recently released. According to Cristy Wyatt of Motorola, there are no plans yet for the company to be in negotiations to do smart phones utilizing the Windows Phone 7. She stated that the company does not envision utilizing the said operating system for mobile phones. The company is 100% on Android and says Windows does not offer possibilities of developing unique value. For some, this is a mistake that Motorola is not yet realizing but for the company, they do not wish to make commoditized hardware only. We can only wait till the future reveals the truth.

In Cristy Wyatt’s words:

“I don’t envision us using Microsoft. I would never say never but it’s not something we’re entertaining now,” said Wyatt. The company proudly boasts of being 100% committed to Android and believes that Microsoft’s “closed” OS prevents them from “creating unique value”.

Motorola Xoom review

24 January, 2011 Posted by As Android (0) Comment

Many phone manufacturers have been keen to get into the tablet market after the success of the iPad and most have opted to use Google Android as their OS. Until now Google had insisted that the OS wasn’t designed for this purpose and was meant merely for smartphones. Because of a spate of Android tablets being released at the end of last year, most notably the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google decided that the smartphone OS needed a revamp to make it more suitable for tablets.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb is what they have come up with. This latest version of Android has been specifically designed for tablet use, with an interface fit for purpose. Some noticeable changes include a new design for Gmail and support for video chat. This update could be the much needed impetus that will boost interest in Android tablets and draw attention away from the iPad, which still remains the market leader, and its successor which is to be released in the coming months.

Honeycomb Android requires dual-core processors to run efficiently and the Motorola Xoom is one of the first tablets to be released with a Tegra 2 dual-core processor. This runs twice as fast as the current 1GHz standard and will make Honeycomb tablets the most powerful tablets to date. The Xoom also has 1GB RAM so it will be able to handle pretty much any task thrown at it. While Honeycomb has been designed with tablet use in mind it is still expected to be used with smartphones and so there should be plenty of Tegra 2 powered Android smartphones released in the coming year.

Motorola XOOM

Motorola has opted for a larger tablet with their first offering, and the Xoom comes with a 10.1″ screen which is more ideally suited for multimedia purposes than smaller devices such as the Galaxy Tab. This can be clearly felt when viewing videos, with the Xoom supporting 720p HD videos out of the box. The interface is very sharp with a high resolution of 1280 x 800 and 150p per inch. This screen is capacitive so there are plenty of multi-touch features such as pinch-to-zoom and also a new “floating finger” interface.

While the Xoom itself can playback 720p videos you can output 1080p videos directly to your TV via the HDMI port. This can be a great feature to have if you have lots of people around and you want to view a video contained on your tablet, but there are too many people to crowd around the device. The Xoom comes with 2 cameras, a 5 megapixel rear facing camera with LED flash and HD video recording, and a secondary front facing camera which, as we know with the latest Android update, can be used for video calling.

One of the best features of the Motorola Xoom that is not likely to be present on other tablets released in the coming months is its support for 4G data connections. This support is likely to provide the Xoom with a much longer lifespan than non-4G competitors, with 4G networks likely to become commonplace in the next couple of years. The Motorola Xoom already has one up on earlier Android tablets by having a suitable OS on board, and when considering some of the many hardware features it has under its belt can probably be considered as the first device belonging to the second generation of tablets, despite this being Motorola’s first offering. There is some speculation that it may even outperform the iPad 2, which has yet to be officially unveiled.

10 Essentials for your Windows Phone 7

samsung focus
Microsoft developed and built the Windows Phone 7 from ground up and they did a really fantastic job to reboot and improve the mobile OS. Of course, there is room for improvement for 2011 but for now; we can only assume that everyone is hearing us out with what we want for the Windows Phone 7.

More speed. WP7 is absolutely fast within the OS capacity but app speed still needs to be consistent. Some apps work efficiently but other still lag. The applications need not always be extremely complex in design as long as it offers robust design. This will help us manage the speed really well.

Landscape keyboard when using IE! It sucks that you have to move around just to type at the address bar, which you cannot access when in landscape mode.

Tap to top functionality. We all have long lists of emails and we have tons of tweets and messages to read. Once we are done, the sad part is that we need to slide back all the way to the top. If there is the tap to top setting, it would take less time to get back to the top.

Screen shots. It would be more functional if we can have a screen shots. The Android has this feature and web OS and iOS use this feature as well. Why not have it on Windows Phone 7?

App for YouTube! We already have Twitter and Facebook and they are solid for the WP7. It would be best if we can have an app that is really dedicated for a more intuitive and solid multimedia experience. This would be a great addition that you will surely love.

Intuitive call answering. In the present setup of the WP7, you have to unlock the phone and click on answer. Those two steps already seem too much for a phone that should function as a phone.

Memory card friendly! The phone should be more easily compatible with Micro SD cards and memory cards in general. The OS should be fixed with better data management features. Many would like to have added memory using cards since they are more practical.

Ring tones that we can love listening to. Default tones are dated and they feel too formal. Many love custom ring tones. If the phone can be customized with new message and call tones, then it would be much more enjoyable to answer the phone or even check your messages.

Customization of the home screen! Windows Phone 7 is designed with simplicity as its finest strengths. If Microsoft tweaks the home screen and makes use of existing applications like the Pictures app to customize the phone screen and let users control the number of apps they see, then it will make the phone experience more personal.

The internet browser! The current one is not that bad but it has issues with JavaScript. Aside from that, it still feels like something for a desktop. It should be used optimally for phones and not just borrowed software from their big cousins.
