Apple and HTC have been sharing cold vibes of late. Apple has filed a suit against HTC over patents infringement. Have a look: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” HTC looks unaware and shocked: “We only learned of Apple’s actions based on your stories and Apple’s press release. We have not been served any papers yet so we are in no position to comment on the claims. We respect and value patent rights but we are committed to defending our own innovations. We have been innovating and patenting our own technology for 13 years.” Via Gizmodo

It seems as if HTC HD2 never gets enough of its snapshots and reviews. Now it gets reviewed by areamobile, who find the multi-touch device quite better considering the Windows platform.

Grab the quick synopsis:

“The remains unmatched advantage of Apple is the perfect software ecosystem that was created by the company during the past two years. Download and buy music and programs from iTunes and App Store are simply unbeatable. But if one sees the gigantic high-end mobile phone from HTC besides the iPhone, then it is suddenly aware of the many drawbacks of compulsory binding to the PC's iTunes software, the rudimentary Bluetooth support, the rigid arrangement of the user interface, the camera without flash that is not replaceable battery - but especially the high price and the adhesion contract with a network operator.

It has been approvingly accepted with the knowledge, the best phone in the world in your hand and hold. But the competition is the development deficit made up. The HTC HD2 marks the beginning of a new generation of high-end smartphones, the Apple phone can suddenly look very old. The user can rejoice, because he is finally faced with a choice between different smart phones and operating systems, even if he has high standards.”

We discussed the WinMo Marketplace ‘Race to Market Challenge’ that apparently seemed to be quite exciting for the devs and ISVs. But some issues have started cropping up. One of them are the registration problems that includes:

Cumbersome registration process

High cost of certification testing

Payment issues regarding credit cards

Not a student friendly program – freebies enrolled through Microsoft Dreamspark program not delighted

No copyright protection guarantee

Archaic process for identity verification, including attestation by a Public Notary

Extra charges(about $99) for each application despite of it passing the required tests

May not impress non-US citizens

With a large set of protocols defined for final submission, MS faces a tough game from the three giants-Blackberry, Apple and Nokia which are scoring high on management. Let’s see when MS fixes the bugs.

Although a lot of people do agree to the fact that Windows Mobile is undergoing a tough time, but no one can simply rule (or ignore) them out from the mobile phone industry the way Apple just did. Apple, during the launch of their new iPhone 3Gs, showed the apps currently available for each platform, which I personally found very funny.

There are a lot of odd things that can observed in the graph above:

They completely IGNORED Windows Mobile which has nearly 20,000 applications available.

Palm has thousands of applications too. There was a time, when they had the most amount of apps in the mobile phone market.

Palm Pre can run all old Palm OS apps

Nokia apps are much, much more than that too

Apple has too many fart apps (pun intended)

Windows Mobile 6.5 is the second dot upgrade to the Windows Mobile 6. The OS is still based on Windows CE 5, so do not expect huge changes. Having said that, it does bring some noticeable improvements in design and in some applications. Let me enlist the major changes that the Windows Mobile 6.5 will bring in the hand of its user: Internet Explorer Mobile 6 Windows Marketplace: A central hub where the people can shop for the Windows Mobile application, much like the Apple Appstore for iPhone. New lock screen New start ‘menu’: Actually, there is no menu now NEW TODAY SCREEN: sliding panel interface now comes from Windows Mobile standard to Windows Mobile professional The first thing that I noticed is the new Startmenu and big close button (shown later). Also, the home screen is not so new for the people who have used Windows Mobile Standard devices before (yes, the ones that do NOT come with touch screens). However, the sliding panel interface is surely new for the Windows Mobile Professional users (touch screen based windows mobile devices). Pressing menu does not reveal a menu anymore. Instead, it reveals the new honey comb interface See that lock button? Pressing that comes a new feature whose idea seems to taken from iPhone. It is the new lock screen. Ofcourse, you can always go back to the digit-style lock screen where you have to enter a code to use the device. File Explorer has also received an update. It is now much more faster than before. Here is the screenshot of the new settings page. In the windows mobile 6.5, Microsoft has introduced support of widgets. They have also included two widget called “MSN WEATHER” and “MSN MONEY” Here are few screenshots from “MSN MONEY” Commentary: Overall, Windows Mobile 6.5 is not a complete makerover of previous version of windows. Windows Mobile 7 is bounded to bring heavy UI changes. That said, Windows Mobile offers the new sliding panel interface along with the IE mobile 6, which are still notable improvements over previous version of windows mobile.
